Fifty previously unemployed and unskilled local men and women have been trained in construction skills. Over the last four years, about half this number have found employment as plumbers, bricklayers and carpenters in the formal construction sector. The rest of the builders are now part of subcontracting teams who tender for piecework on the building in progress. In this way, the builders are being prepared for life in the construction industry when the Centre is complete. The surounding walls, preschool, caretaker's flat and Mothers and Infants centre are all in use. Work is progressing well on the Kitchen and Dining Complex. Etafeni is, as far as we know, the only community-built centre in the Western Cape.
